Riverhead fire marshals probe gas smell that forced bank headquarters evacuation

TIM GANNON PHOTO | Firefighters are searching for the cause of a gas odor that forced an evacuation at Suffolk County National Bank headquarters.

Suffolk County National Bank’s Second Street headquarters was evacuated for over an hour Thursday after employees noticed a smell of gas in the building about 12:40 p.m.

Riverhead firefighters responded to the scene to look for the cause of gas.

Firefighters used the department’s 102-foot ladder truck to search the roof of the three-story building.

The fire department returned to the station about 1:45 p.m. — and the employees returned to the building — and the investigation is being handled by the town fire marshal’s office.
