Riverhead High School senior Melodee Riley and Greenport High School senior Alexis Reed both were named athletes of the year for their schools for the second year in a row by Times/Review Newsgroup on Friday when the media company announced its 2011-12 selections.

Riley (field hockey, basketball, track and field) and Reed (field hockey, softball) were among 12 athletes selected. Times/Review Newsgroup presented plaques to the top female and male athletes in the schools in its coverage area for the 27th straight year on Friday during a reception at the company’s Mattituck offices.

The occasion marked a first. Reed and her brother, Michael Reed, the Greenport male athlete of the year, became the first twins to receive the honor. Michael Reed played soccer, basketball and baseball.

The other athletes selected were: senior Sasa Vann (winter track, track and field) and senior Patrick Stepnoski (football, basketball, baseball) of Bishop McGann-Mercy, junior Ryan Bitzer (football, basketball, lacrosse) of Riverhead, senior Shannon McDonnell (soccer, winter track, track and field) and senior Mike O’Reilly (baseball) of Shoreham-Wading River, junior Alexa Orlando (volleyball, basketball, softball) and junior Tomasz Filipkowski (football, wrestling, lacrosse) of Mattituck, and senior Lauren Ficurilli (field hockey, basketball) and senior Kyle Clausen (golf, basketball, baseball) of Southold.

Clausen is not the first member of his family to be so honored. His older brother, Rob Clausen, was Southold’s 2008-9 male athlete of the year.
