Elizabeth Grattan Tarner
Elizabeth Grattan Tarner of Cheshire, Conn., died at Elim Park Nursing Center there on June 30, 2012, from complications of COPD. She was 91 years old.
She was born on February 12, 1921, in Southold, N.Y., to William J. and Elizabeth H. (Young) Grattan. In 1939, she graduated from Southold High School and on March 10, 1950, she married Stanley P. Tarner.
Formerly of Connecticut and Massachusetts, she had been an Assistant Town Clerk for the Town of Esopus, N.Y., and was active in numerous volunteer positions.
Predeceased by her husband, Stanley P. Tarner, she is survived by her children, John (Trish) Jetter of St. Petersburg, Fla., Elizabeth (Martin) Abbatiello of Cheshire, Conn., and Brian (Sherry) Tarner of Salisbury, N.C.; two siblings, Roger (Ginny) Grattan of Greenport and Margaret Bradstock of Davie, Fla.; seven grandchildren, James and Marissa Abbatiello, Sarah, Ali and Ethan Tarner and Ryan and Rana Jetter; a devoted nephew, Timothy O’Donnell; and many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by siblings William Grattan, Jean Grattan Goff, Charles Grattan and Barbara Grattan O’Donnell.
The family received friends at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold Thursday, July 5. Funeral services were held Friday, July 6, with Father Thomas P. Murray officiating. Interment was at St. Patrick R.C. Cemetery.
