Oil leak shuts down Route 58 entrance to the LIE

A car leaking oil led to the closure of the on ramp to the Long Island Expressway from Route 58 late Wednesday morning, Riverhead Town fire officials said.

There is currently no approximate time when the on ramp will reopen.

“It looks like it might be [leaking] hydraulic oil,”said Chief Riverhead Fire Marshal Craig Zitek. “Someone is liable to slip on it, especially since they go flying [onto the on ramp].”

Mr. Zitek said he believes the same car might be responsible for leaking fluid onto Mill Road near Route 58 shortly before entering the LIE.
