While state assessment test scores in three local school districts generally improved from last year, Riverhead Central School District’s report card came back mixed, with mean scores for English in grades 3 through 8 either at or below the state average and math scores mostly above state standards, according to state assessment results.

Shoreham-Wading River was Riverhead Town’s top-performing school, with grades that exceeded state averages in both math and English, while Riverhead Charter School saw generally positive improvement in both average scores and the number of students who met or exceeded state proficiency standards.

The annual New York State tests evaluate students in grades 3 through 8 based on their English and math skills, and serve as a benchmark to determine how well schools are conforming to state standards.

Riverhead school’s English scores were the worst of the three local districts, falling just below state average in all grades except sixth, which was even with the state mean score.

However, math average scores in Riverhead were mostly better than the state’s average, and both math and English average scores across the grades rose slightly from last year, which matches a statewide trend in overall rising test scores.

The number of students who met or exceeded expectations in Riverhead are also up from last year, but lag behind the state average in English and are on par in math. The biggest improvement came in fifth grade English rates, where 59.1 percent of students passed, up more than 22 percent from 2011.

The biggest single decline in passing rate came in the Riverhead Charter School’s third grade math tests, which fell from 77.5 percent passing in 2011 to 51.3 percent passing in 2012. But rates in the other three grades at the charter school all greatly exceeded the state average.

Shoreham-Wading River had the best scores of the three local schools, according to the report. Test scores and passing rates generally rose, and all exceeded state averages. The district’s math scores were slightly higher than their English results, which also copies statewide results.

Riverhead, Shoreham-Wading River, and Riverhead Charter School’s test results are below. You can read the full state assessment results for 2012 here.
