Riverhead firefighters quickly put out a car fire that engulfed the engine of a sedan on Route 58 Wednesday afternoon.

A passenger in the red Ford Focus SE hatchback said he heard a pop as he and the driver were traveling on Route 58 shortly before 3 p.m. They pulled into the parking lot of a nearby Hess station on Route 58 when smoke began to billow out from under the hood, he said.

Riverhead firefighters first received the call of a car fire about 3 p.m., officials said. The engine compartment of the hatchback was on fire when they arrived, said second assistant chief Kevin Brooks at the scene.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 3:15 p.m. No one was injured in the incident, witnesses said.

Officials have not determined the cause of the fire yet.
