Maysonet Watch: Riverhead grad tallies 196 yards, three scores in opener

Former Riverhead High Hansen Award winner Miguel Maysonet tallied 196 yards of total offense and scored three touchdowns to lead Stony Brook University to a 49-17 victory over Central Connecticut in his senior-season opener Saturday.

Maysonet, who was named to the watch list for the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision, ran for scores of 84 and 5 yards and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyle Essington.

Saturday marked the first season-opening win for Stony Brook since 2008. Stony Brook is 8-3 all-time against Central Connecticut, having never lost at home.

The Seawolves (1-0) play at home again next Saturday at 6 p.m. against Pace (0-1). Fans looking for a double dose of football can also check out Riverhead High hosting its opener against West Babylon at 2 p.m. Saturday.
