Cops: Drunk driver hit bicyclist, fled scene

An alleged drunk driver who struck a bicyclist in Riverhead and fled the scene Monday evening was arrested a short time later on the Long Island Expressway, Riverhead Town Police said.

Robert Michael, 47, of Deer Park struck Leslie Harris, 40, of Ridge as Mr. Harris road his bike down Route 58 just west of McDonalds shortly before 7 p.m., police said.

Mr. Michael was arrested after a state trooper spotted his vehicle and recognized that it matched the description of one featured in a report sent out to multiple law enforcement agencies alerting them to the hit-and-run, police said.

He was charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident and held for a Tuesday morning arraignment.

Mr. Harris was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.
