Cops: Riverhead man got into verbal dispute at Hess, then drove drunk

A 29-year-old Riverhead man was charged with driving while intoxicated Thursday night after he got into a verbal dispute with someone at the Hess gas station in Mattituck, Southold Town police said.

Joseph A. Kess was found to be drunk after he was pulled over in the parking lot immediately following the 8 p.m. dispute, police said.

Police did not disclose what the dispute was over or with whom he was fighting.

Hess, like just about every other gas station in the area, had long lines spilling into the street all day Thursday, three days after Hurricane Sandy struck the North Fork.
