John George Daly Jr.

Oct. 23, 1930-Nov. 1, 2012

John George Daly Jr. of Baiting Hollow, 82, passed away peacefully Nov. 1 at Peconic Bay Medical Center, surrounded by his devoted family.

John was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 23, 1930, to Christine (Walker) and John G. Daly Sr. His dear sister, Margaret, her husband, Bill, and their five children survive him.

John attended high school at Cathedral Prep in Brooklyn. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from December 1951 to August 1952.

He married the love of his life, Rose Ann McManus of Brooklyn, on June 14, 1952. They were fortunate to have had a fulfilling marriage and joyfully celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2012.

John is survived by his wife and seven children, Thomas (Rose), John (Maria), Mary Beth (Leo), Patrick, Christine (Jim), Matthew (Laurie) and Ann (Thomas).

John raised his family in Brooklyn, then moved to Hampton Bays, N.Y. He retired to Naples, Fla., and recently returned to Baiting Hollow, N.Y., to be closer to his family.

John was a devout Catholic. He had many family and friends who adored him. In Florida, John volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul. He enjoyed fishing and collecting coins but loved most his dear wife, Rose Ann, and his family.

John also leaves behind beloved grandchildren Erin, Thomas, Kristen, Jenna, Matthew, Michael, Ashley, Brittany, Corin, Tyler, Owen, Liam, Connor, Meghan, Mackenzie, Ariana and Gianni; and his beloved great grandchildren, Kaleigh, Copelynn, Brooklynn, Noah and Aubrey.

A wake was held Nov. 5 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass was held Nov. 6 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, followed by burial at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, it was John’s wish to have donations made to the American Red Cross, Wounded Warrior or Parkinson’s research.
