Firefighters put out Horton Avenue car fire

PAUL SQUIRE PHOTO | Riverhead firefighters tear the hood off the burning Mercedes Benz on Horton Avenue Sunday night.

A Mercedes Benz was burned in a field near Horton Avenue Sunday night, Riverhead Town police said. No one was inside the car at the time of the fire.

A passerby noticed the burning sedan off the road east of Horton Avenue in a field just south of St. Isidore Cemetery about 6:15 p.m., according to police at the scene.

Riverhead Fire Department volunteers doused the burning car. The cause of the fire had not yet been determined, police said. Circular tracks in the field around the car were likely the result of tractors in the field, and were unrelated to the fire, an officer at the scene said.

Riverhead police closed Horton Avenue from south of Reeves Avenue to north of the residences while the fire was extinguished.

No one was hurt in the blaze.
