Michael E. Gorman

Michael Gorman, age 56, of Mattituck, N.Y., a much-loved brother and uncle, passed away Nov. 8, 2012, at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan, following a long and brave fight with kidney disease.

Michael was born in Rockville Centre on April 1, 1956, son of Mary and Thomas Gorman, who predeceased him. After graduating from Purdue University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree, Michael joined his father, Tom, in their family real estate appraisal and property management business in Mattituck. Michael and his dad worked side by side until Tom’s death in 2007, at which time Michael expertly and meticulously tended the business and all related responsibilities.

During his younger years, Michael enjoyed a diverse range of interests, including bottle hunting, golfing, sailing, breeding Irish Setters and gardening. In his later years, and after experiencing unexpected medical challenges, Michael continued to derive immense enjoyment from his beloved lake, faithful canine companion Henry and visits from his siblings, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends.

Michael was a loving brother and uncle and a lifelong friend to everyone. His kind and compassionate nature, along with his dry sense of humor, drew people to him. He taught and modeled strong family values that will endure, and the memory of his courage, dignity, grace and resilience will remain with the individuals that had the honor of knowing him.

Those keeping his memory alive include his sister Nancy Eshelman and husband, Thomas; sister Patti Scott and husband, Charles; brother Thomas Gorman Jr. and wife, Dolores; and sister Mary Lou Gagliano and husband, Nicholas; and nieces and nephews Kathleen Eshelman, Matthew Eshelman, Zachary Scott, Travis Scott, Ethan Scott, Mary Gorman, Samantha Gagliano and Jacob Gagliano.

Friends and colleagues are invited to a memorial celebration of Michael’s life at noon on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at Giorgio’s in Baiting Hollow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Kidney Fund, the American Liver Foundation or the Wounded Warrior Project.
