Update: Woman dies following two-car crash near the LIE

An 82-year-old Queens woman died Tuesday following a two-car crash on Edwards Avenue near the Long Island Expressway in Calverton, Suffolk County Police said.

Marilyn Mallon of Flushing was driving her 1998 Honda eastbound on the off ramp of the Long Island Expressway when she entered the intersection and collided with a 1998 GMC traveling southbound on County Road 24 at approximately 10:15 a.m., police said.

Due to the weather, a Suffolk County police helicopter was unable to airlift the victim to Stony Brook Hospital, Suffolk County police said, so she was transported by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead,  where she died from her injuries.

The driver of the GMC, Tyler Yaskanich, 18, of Shoreham, suffered minor injuries, police said.

The road was briefly closed while the scene of the accident was cleared, police said.
