A section of Flanders Road near Glider Avenue remained closed to traffic Thursday morning, more than nine hours after an alleged drunk driver crashed into a telephone pole, knocking down power lines, according to Southampton Town Police.

The accident occurred at 10:31 p.m. on Wednesday, when a car driven by Daniel Halstead, 22, of Calverton struck a utility pole on Flanders Road near Glider Avenue, causing wires to fall, and forcing the road to be closed overnight between Evergreen Road and Wood Road Trail, while waiting for LIPA to repair the power lines, police said.

It was still closed at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Mr. Halstead, who was uninjured in the crash, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
