Wendell M. Downs Jr.

Wendell M. Downs Jr. of Galway, N.Y., died suddenly Dec. 10, 2012. He was 82.

The son of Wendell M. and Myrtle H. Downs of Aquebogue, he was born Oct. 6, 1930, in Riverhead.

Wendell was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired electrical engineer for IBM. He was a graduate of Hudson Valley Technical Institute and attended additional classes at MIT.

Upon retirement, he was the assessor for the town of Providence, N.Y., for 14 years. He enjoyed gardening, history, model trains, restoring antique tractors, and his many friends.

Mr. Downs was predeceased by his wife, Anna, and is survived by his children, Wendell G. Downs, Grace Ross and Cynthia Clester; two sisters, Marilyn Aldrich and Susan White; three grandsons; three great-grandchildren; an uncle, Walter Haberman; and his dear friend Cheryl Lee.

Interment will be at Aquebogue Cemetery at a later date.
