FIELD HOCKEY: Awards aplenty for Riverhead Riverhead, which won six of its last seven games of the regular season to earn a playoff berth, did quite well at the Suffolk County field hockey awards dinner on Dec. 19. Christy Brewer was named to the all-county team. Maria Dillingham and Amanda Graziano were all-conference choices while Corinne Kimmelmann and Danielle Napoli both made the all-division team. Christina Sacchitello was selected to the all-tournament team. They weren’t the only Riverhead award winners, either. Cheryl Walsh was selected the Division III Coach of the Year.

Meanwhile, the Greenport/Southold/Shelter Island team coached by Rebecca Lillis was presented with the Marilyn Cross Sportsmanship Award. The award is issued to one team in Suffolk County each year and is chosen by the Field Hockey Umpires Association.

BOYS SOCCER: Greenport’s good sports Greenport’s varsity and junior varsity soccer teams achieved a rare double recently when they were both named recipients of the 2012 Suffolk County Sportsmanship Award given by the Suffolk County Referees’ Association. It is only the second time that a school has had a varsity and junior varsity team receive the honor in the same year. Greenport’s varsity team was a sportsmanship award winner in 2003.

The award is given to the teams that display sportsmanship prior to, during and after contests.

The Greenport varsity team, captained by seniors Matt Dibble, Camilo Torres and Jesus Duran, was presented with a plaque and trophy at the annual boys’ soccer coaches association awards dinner last month. Varsity coaches Chris Golden and James Read, along with junior varsity coach Tom Taylor, were pleased with the behavior of their players. Golden said, “This validates everything in our soccer program that we try to teach and impart to our players about how they should conducts themselves and treat other people while continuing to compete at the highest level possible.”
