Alfred J. Amend

Alfred J. Amend, a longtime summer resident of the North Fork, died in Jupiter, Fla., Dec. 21, 2012.

He was born Nov. 13, 1934, to Adelaide M. and Myles B. Amend and grew up in Crestwood, N.Y. He spent his boyhood summers on Nassau Point and owned a home in Cedar Beach in Southold for many years.

Mr. Amend graduated from Iona College, Class of 1957, and was commissioned in the U.S. Navy four months later. After discharge from the Navy, having served on Guam and in Norfolk, Va., Mr. Amend had a long and distinguished career in the insurance business, retiring as partner in Professional Coverage Managers, now PCM Intermediaries.

Mr. Amend was married in 1957 to Mary Ellen Donahue, who died in 1996. He is survived by their children, Catherine McDonald (John) of Summit N.J., James M. (Sue), of Huntington, and Robert K. (Nola), of Centerport; and by his grandchildren, Alexandra, Blair and John McDonald and Jake Amend. He was the brother of Mary A. Lundberg of Aquebogue, Adelaide Amend of Cutchogue, Kathleen A. Collins of New York City and Laurel, Clare A. Quirk of Washington, D.C., and the late Margaret Amend and Myles B. Amend Jr. He was the companion of Mercedes Grant.

A funeral Mass was held at St. Brigid’s Church in Westbury, N.Y., on Dec. 28. Burial was at Holy Rood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 1111 Stewart Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714.
