Group hurls slur, punches at woman in Riverside

A Riverhead woman was attacked outside a Riverside gas station early Thursday by a group of men who called the victim a slur about her sexual orientation while attempting to hit her, Southampton Town police said.

The victim told police she had approached someone at the Valero Gas Station near the Riverside traffic circle about midnight, asking the man for a cigarette, according to a police report.

The man grabbed her face and shoved her backward into a parked car, the report reads. Three other men starting taking swings at the victim while making comments about her sexual orientation and appearance, police said.

The alleged attack happened just after midnight.

The woman went to Peconic Bay Medical Center later that day, where she was treated for head, neck and back trauma, according to the report.

Detectives are investigating the incident, authorities said.
