Joseph Ignatius Jackewicz Sr.

Joseph Ignatius Jackewicz Sr. of Magnolia, Del., passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Kent General Hospital. He was 86.

Mr. Jackewicz was born Feb. 1, 1927, in Southold, N.Y., (Long Island) to Blazej Walter Jackewicz and Stefania Yodczyk Jackewicz. He was a farmer all his life, starting in Calverton, eastern Long Island, before moving to Delaware. 

Mr. Jackewicz was the founder and a board member of Kent Sussex Industries for 41 years, retiring in 2005. He was also on the Kent County agland preservation committee. Mr. Jackewicz was president of many foundations, including the Peninsula Horticultural Society, the Produce Growers Association, the Council of Farm Organizations and the Delaware Vegetable Growers Association. He was national president of the Potato Council and a member of the G7WC Guild Association, the Paul Harris Fellow Camden/Wyoming Rotary, Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Jackewicz was preceded in death by his wife, Matilda Jackewicz, in 2007; son Charles Jackewicz in 2010; brothers, Anthony and Blaise Jackewicz; and sister Sophia Lucas.

He is survived by his daughter, Shirley Johnston of Rising Sun, Del., and Alexandria, Egypt; son, Joseph Jackewicz Jr. and his wife, Graclyn, of Dover, Del.; sister Marian Klodaski of Long Island, N.Y.; grandsons, Thomas and Stephen Jackewicz; niece, Susan Jackewicz; and nephews, Paul and John Jackewicz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State St., Dover. Friends may call from 6 to 8 Tuesday evening at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rte. 10), Dover. Interment will be at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Scholarship Fund for Future Farmers of America, c/o Nick Rodriguez, 414 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901.
