And now for the encore.

It took two overtimes, but when Shoreham-Wading River defeated John Glenn Feb. 7, 59-49, in the final game of the regular season, the Wildcats emerged as league champions. The victory propelled the Wildcats to the No. 2 seed in the Class A playoffs and a bye into today’s semifinal, which tips off at 4 p.m. at Shoreham-Wading River High School.

To get to the county championship game, the Wildcats will need to beat the Knights, their longtime playoff nemesis, again.

John Glenn received the No. 3 seed in the bracket despite a better overall record than Shoreham. The Knights are 17-2; the Wildcats are 14-4. Both teams won one game against each other in the regular season.

The Knights won 36-29 against Sayville in the first round of the playoffs Friday to set up today’s rematch, which tips off at 4 p.m.

John Glenn ended Shoreham’s playoff run in each of the past two seasons. Last year’s semifinal ended in a 40-point blowout.

Today’s game will be the fourth playoff matchup between the two teams since 2008. Glenn has won each time so far.

This game will also mark the fifth time in the past six years the Wildcats have stood one win away from the county finals.
