Sex offender nabbed after Riverside trailer move

A sex offender who had been living at the county’s trailer for homeless sex offenders in Riverside was arrested for failing to register a new address with state authorities, Southampton Town police said.

Charles Johnson, 45, was arrested Feb. 28, weeks after he vacated the Department of Social Services-run shelter parked outside the county jail, town police said.

“Approximately two months ago, based on thorough record-keeping and periodic address checks,” an investigation found he had moved to a new location, according to a police press release issued Monday.

But he did so without alerting the state Division of Criminal Justice Services within 10 days of moving, police said.

Mr. Johnson is labeled a Level 3 sex offender, deemed the highest risk to re-offend.

According to state records, he was convicted of rape and sodomy charges in connection with a 1987 attack on a 22-year-old woman.

He is being held at the county jail, police said.
