Driver suffers only minor injuries in tree crash in Riverhead

A Jeep driver was taken to an area hospital Friday afternoon after crashing head-on into a tree in Riverhead, town police said.

The driver of the maroon Jeep Wrangler was heading east on Sound Avenue about 12:20 p.m. before crashing into a tree just past Phillips Lane, authorities said.

The driver, who was not identified by police, was trying to go around another vehicle when the crash happened, officials said.

Riverhead police officers and ambulance volunteers responded to the scene. The driver was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by ambulance with minor injuries to the neck, back and shoulders, ambulance volunteers said.
