Cops: Man smashed car windows and hid

A Riverside man is facing criminal mischief and trespassing charges after smashing the windows of two cars with a machete, then hiding from police in another man’s basement apartment, Southampton Town police said.

Police got a call about 10:15 p.m. last Monday from a Riverside resident on County Road 104 saying a man was smashing out the windows of his 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis and his 1999 Toyota SRS with a machete, according to a police report.

Police got to the scene and searched for the suspect and about an hour later, another resident arrived to his Riverside home after a trip to the gas station and found a man lying  on the floor of his basement apartment, police said.

The resident called police, who arrested 23-year-old Brian Estrada at the scene.

Police said Mr. Estrada entered the house through an unlocked door, locked the door behind him and then hid on the floor to escape police.

He was charged with second-degree criminal mischief and second-degree criminal trespassing and taken to police headquarters for processing.
