Times/Review Newsgroup finished third among newspaper chains in total contest points in the New York Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were handed out at NYPA’s annual spring convention in Saratoga Springs this past weekend.

Both the Riverhead News-Review and The Suffolk Times won second place for the Past Presidents’ Award for General Excellence in their respective circulation divisions.

The News-Review also walked away with second place in the prestigious Community Service Award category for its coverage of the need for a long-term pediatric care facility on Long Island.

In total, the News-Review earned 13 awards, including first place for Coverage of Crime, Police and Courts.

“The awards are a testament to how much our staff truly enjoys the role we play in the community,” said Times/Review publisher Andrew Olsen. “We also owe a great deal of gratitude to the readers and advertisers who make our work possible.”

Times/Review Newsgroup earned a total of 308 contest points, second most of any Long Island chain. The company took home a total of 29 awards.

“It’s always a great honor to have your work recognized by your peers,” said Times/Review executive editor Grant Parpan. “I’m so proud of our talented, hard working staff.”

The contest, which included 2,351 entries from 150 weekly newspapers across New York State, was judged by the North Carolina Press Association.
