Cops: Flanders man involved in fatal crash

A Flanders man was involved in a motor vehicle crash that led to the death of a 34-year-old motorcyclist Sunday in Yaphank, Suffolk County police said.

Israel Berger Carrera-Garcia, 38, of Flanders was driving a 2002 Mercury SUV on Expressway Drive North shortly before 3 p.m. when his vehicle collided with a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle that was traveling north on Sills Road in Yaphank, police said.

The driver of the Kawasaki, Michael Luthy, 34, of Medford was thrown from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

Mr.Carrera-Garcia suffered minor injuries related to the vehicle’s air bag deploying, police said. He was examined at the scene by a Yaphank Fire Department EMT.

Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check, police said.
