Earlier reports: A pedestrian was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Route 58 in Riverhead Tuesday night and a section of the busy thoroughfare was closed to traffic as police launched an investigation, officials at the scene said.

The accident happened about 9:30 p.m. in front of Rocco’s pizzeria, on the south side of Route 58 near Woodcrest Avenue, and involved serious injuries, Riverhead police said.

A Cadillac remained on the scene, parked on the sidewalk, indicating the driver may have fled the area on foot.

A reporter did spot a police helicopter using a spotlight in an apparent search, mostly south of Route 58.

As of 10 p.m, the road remained closed in both directions between Osborn and Harrison avenues.
