Anne N. Mitchell

Anne “Nanci” Mitchell, 78, of Peconic passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013. Her memory and irrepressible spirit will be cherished by her husband, Bob; her children, Anne, Maura and Michael; and all who knew her.

A Manhattan native and graduate of the Katherine Gibbs School, Nanci was the executive assistant to the president of the Forstmann Woolen Company before marrying and moving to Port Washington. The First Lady of Children’s Theatre for the Junior League of Long Island, she was also an active fundraiser and organizer.

An avid tennis player at Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, Nanci also crewed for Bob in frostbite dinghies and was a cockpit boss on a 41-foot racing sailboat. She enjoyed cruising on Long Island Sound with her family every summer for many years.

In retirement, Nanci and Bob traveled the world, visiting Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Bangkok, Bali, Sweden, Ireland, Vienna and Frankfurt, as well as taking a stunning trip by rail from Banff through Vancouver to the San Juan Islands and Alaska.

Nanci took full advantage of living in Southold, golfing with the Cedarettes and working with the Southold Garden Club and Friends of Southold Library.

In addition to her husband and children, Nanci is survived by her grandchildren, Lucie and Kevin Coneys and John, Michael, Erin and Grace Kelly; sons-in-law, Kevin Coneys and James Kelly; and daughter-in-law, Holly Jennings.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Eastern Long Island Hospital at elih.org or ELIH, Foundations Office, 201 Manor Place, Greenport, NY 11944.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. The Rev. Andrew Blake will officiate. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.
