Cops: Flanders man robbed of $7,000

A Flanders man saw his life savings stolen when he was mugged while walking home from a Flanders restaurant late last Saturday, according to a Southampton Town police report.

The victim told police he was returning to his Cypress Avenue home from the nearby Cabana Latina restaurant about 11:45 p.m. when he was struck in the head just above his left eye, the report reads. The victim fell to the ground, and someone went through his pockets and took his wallet, which reportedly contained $7,000 in cash and nearly $700 in checks, as well as a Samsung-brand cellphone.

Southampton police Lieutenant James Kiernan said the victim had “his whole life savings on him” at the time of the robbery.

The victim said he did not see who hit him. After the attack he managed to make it to his brother’s house, and was taken from there to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment. Police arrived at the hospital and found the victim’s eye was swollen shut with a large gash above it, police said.
