Joan Hanken

Joan Hanken of Calverton died Sept. 23, 2013, at the age of 85.

She was born Dec. 3, 1927, in Queens to Mary Patricia and Albert Kain and was raised by her mother and her stepfather, John Szeronos.

Joan had worked as a bookkeeper with the Port Jefferson School District and was past president of the Riverhead Seniors.

She married William Hanken on November 16, 1945, and for many years they made their home in Calverton.

For the past six years, Joan had resided at the Peconic Bay Skilled Nursing Facility in Riverhead.

Joan is survived by her children, Lawrence (Sandra) Hanken of Hibbing, Minn., and Kathleen (Jon) Lake of Cutchogue; five grandchildren, Juliet Carlson, Brad Hanken, Katie Hanken, Matthew Lake and Garrett Lake; and six great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Sept. 26 at Alexander-Tuthill Funeral Home in Wading River. A Mass of Christian Burial took place Sept. 27 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
