An East Hampton mother was arrested after she left her infant in her truck while she went shopping at Wal-Mart Tuesday afternoon, Riverhead Town police said.

Police got an anonymous 911 call at 1:27 p.m. about a crying child left in a vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot, police said. Riverhead officers and ambulance volunteers arrived at the scene and got the infant — who was reportedly suffering from heat exhaustion — out of the car.

The child’s mother, 27-year-old Theresa Tran, came out of the store while police were on scene and admitted that the infant was her child, police said. The infant was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment.

Ms. Tran was arrested at the scene and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. She was arraigned in Riverhead Town Justice Court Wednesday afternoon and released on her own recognizance.

She is due back in court on Nov. 4.
