Photos: Grumman planes get some TLC from volunteers in Calverton
Restoration of the F-14 and A-6E fighter jets on loan from the U.S. Navy and on display at Grumman Memorial Park in Calverton got under way Friday.
Six volunteers — many of them Grumman retirees — from Nassau County’s Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City donated their time Friday morning to perform “spot repairs,” by power-washing and scraping away and chipping paint from the airplanes. Read more …

How Common Core is being implemented in Riverhead schools
Riverhead School District Superintendent Nancy Carney wants the public to know where the true frustration lies with Common Core.
During the school board’s regular meeting Tuesday night, Ms. Carney said she believes there’s a lot of confusion about the Common Core Standards Initiative since New York adopted it, because several different developments occurred simultaneously when the new curriculum was rolled out, including a state-mandated annual professional performance review plans, known as APPR. Police detonate grenade found in Riverside roadway
Police detonated what appeared to be a hand grenade that was reportedly thrown from a moving vehicle onto the side of the road in Riverside Friday afternoon, police at the scene said.
Bomb experts have not yet determined if the grenade was armed, or if it was a “dummy” explosive. Read more …
