Lax coach out & more: most read stories of 2013

It was an eventful 2013 in Riverhead. We’ll spare you the details, since we’ve run plenty of year in review items for you to catch up on from last year.

But, since they interested you so much the first time around, we figured we’d share our top five most-read stories from last year.

Without further ado:

5. Fire destroys downtown’s Athens Grill: Flames engulfed the Athens Grill restaurant on East Main Street in late June. The fire occurred on a Friday night during dinner and there were no injuries.

4. Alleged hit and run driver released from jail: A 23-year-old Riverhead man was seriously injured in a hit and run in Flanders. Southampton Town police arrested a 21-year-old woman three days after the incident. The coverage generated the fourth-most traffic to riverheadnewsreview.com in 2013.

3.Riverhead grad shot, killed following break-in: In late January of 2013, Riverhead High School graduate Demitri Hampton was killed in Flanders following a home invasion. The crime sent shockwaves throughout the community and Mr. Hampton’s memory has lived on ever since. There has still been no arrests in the case.

2. Funeral arrangements set for Riverhead detective Bob Boden: The news of veteran Riverhead detective Bob Boden’s unexpected death generated an outpouring of sympathy from the community. Mr. Boden, a beloved father of four, died in October. Mr. Boden was a lifelong Riverhead resident who had been on the force since 1981.

1. Lacrosse legend out after 19 years as SWR coach: The story of Tom Rotanz’s dismissal as Shoreham-Wading River boys lacrosse coach was the most read story on riverheadnewsreview.com in 2013. The news came as a shock to most in the community. Supporters of Mr. Rotanz flooded the school board meeting in November to protest the decision.
