SUV hits school bus, crosses into oncoming traffic and flips onto side

JENNIFER GUSTAVSON PHOTO |  A Chevy Suburban flipped onto its side on Country Road 105 Wednesday afternoon.

The driver of a Chevy Suburban escaped serious injury after his vehicle hit a mini school bus on County Road 105, crossed into oncoming traffic and flipped onto its side, police officials at the scene said.

The SUV was heading southbound on 105 about 1:45 p.m. when the driver — a 59-year-old man — attempted to pass a school bus in the right lane just north of Hubbard Avenue, officials said. The SUV struck the bus, sending it skidding into oncoming traffic on the northbound side. The SUV drove around a guardrail and flipped into the median, officials said.

The man driving the SUV was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The school bus did not have any students inside and neither the driver nor an attendant were injured.

The northbound lanes were briefly closed for about 30 minutes.
