Six homeless men injured in West Main Street brawl

An afternoon of drinking in an abandoned house on West Main Street turned violent Saturday when a fight broke out between nine homeless men, Riverhead Town Police said.

Six of the men — all between the ages of 24 and 38 — sustained bruises and facial lacerations in the scuffle and four of them were treated at Peconic Bay Medical Center, police said. The other two men refused medical attention.

Police were notified of the brawl shortly before 4 p.m. when one of the men was found unconscious with lacerations to the face outside Fishermen’s Deli.

A Spanish interpreter determined that three additional homeless men who were in the house at the time of the fight were uninjured, police said.

None of the men involved in the incident, all of whom were “highly intoxicated,” cooperated with police and no arrests have been made, police said. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Riverhead police at 631-727-4500 ex. 327.
