A 22-year-old Riverhead man has been arrested on a felony assault charge after he allegedly attacked a homeless man with a hammer on Roanoke Avenue last week, Riverhead Town police said.

Police were called to Peconic Bay Medical Center at around 3:40 a.m. on Thursday after the victim had reported he had been assaulted by an acquaintance near the Grace Episcopal Church, officials said.

Efrain Amaya was arrested Saturday and charged with second-degree assault, police said. He was arraigned and held at Suffolk County jail on $25,000 bail, officials said.
