Crohan makes college baseball debut at Winthrop
Matt Crohan, a former star pitcher at Riverhead High School, made his collegiate debut at Winthrop University Sunday, pitching 4 innings in a 3-1 win over Coppin State.
Crohan, who last year won the Carl Yastrzemski Award as the top player in Suffolk County, started Sunday’s game and gave up 1 run and 2 hits. He struck out three and did not issue any walks.
Winthrop improved to 4-3 on the season. Sunday’s game was the last of four games in the 2014 Coca-Cola Classic.
Last year Crohan compiled one of the most dominant seasons in Riverhead history, striking out 104 batters in 47 innings for a school record. He is the only Riverhead player to ever win the Yastrzemski Award.
