Robert Kurtis Schlender

Robert Kurtis Schlender passed away March 1, 2014, at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. He was 53.

He was born April 5, 1960, in Southampton to Herbert and Sarah (Morgan) Schlender of Port Richey, Fla. He was born with cerebral palsy and was wheelchair-bound his whole life.

Robert lived the majority of his life at Little Flower Children’s Services in Wading River. He brought joy with his beautiful smile, gorgeous blue eyes and passionate love for Elvis Presley. He spent the past 10 months at several facilities including Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC) Suffolk Shoreham ICF, Mather Memorial Hospital, Medford Multicare Center and finally Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, where he entered Brookhaven Memorial hospice care on Feb. 26.

Robert is survived by his parents, Herbert and Sarah; three brothers, Paul, Carl and Brian; two sisters-in-law, Karen and Joanne; two nieces, Samantha and Isabelle; and one step-nephew, Christopher Rosakranse.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 11, at 1:30 p.m. at AHRC Suffolk Shoreham ICF, North 1 Building. For directions, call 744-7158. Pastor Tony Balsamo of Integrity Christian Fellowship will preside over the ceremony.

Memorial donations may be made to Little Flower Children’s Services or AHRC Suffolk Shoreham ICF. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Fives Funeral Homes of Smithtown and Patchogue.

The Schlender family extends their deepest appreciation to all those who so lovingly cared for Robert during his life on Earth.
