The Riverhead High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps drill team placed third overall in a championship drill meet on Saturday in New Jersey, competing among the 10 best qualifying schools in the area.

The team’s color guard — led by Rachel Blackmore — won first place at the meet and was crowned the Area Four champions, while the armed platoon earned second place honors during the event.

Unarmed platoon and academic teams each finished in third place in their events, school officials said.

“The Riverhead Drill Team proved that they can compete with anyone by finishing in the top three in four of six main events,” said Naval Science Instructor Lt. Col. Peter McCarthy in a statement.

In addition, about 350 cadets competed in the Individual Drill Competition where Nicholas Deschamps finished in fourth place.
