Jack Kanas

Jack Kanas of Center Moriches, passed away peacefully at his home March 16, surrounded by family and friends. He was 89. 

Jack was born Sept. 23, 1924, and grew up in a farming community in East Moriches. He married Phebe Haggerty and they lived in Center Moriches for many years, raising their children. After Phebe’s death, Jack remained in Center Moriches before meeting his longtime love and companion of more than 20 years, Jean Tuthill who lives in Jamesport.

Jack worked in sales for multiple Long Island companies. In addition to his employment, Jack took pride in serving in local fire departments. His daughter, Jackie Kanas said “he dedicated a great deal of life to serving,” starting as a fireman in East Moriches and later becoming a chief, then commissioner for Center Moriches.

According to Jackie, Jack also his “greatest passion” was golf, but he enjoyed all sports. His greatest joy was his family and Jackie spoke of how he “always put his family first.”

In addition to Jean, Jack is survived his children Judi Pirozzi, Jackie, Bill, and Jenn Willmott and his seven grandchildren, Matthew, Jenna, Andrew, Billy, Chandler Ryan and Madison.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, March 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Wesche Funeral Home in Center Moriches. A funeral service will take place Thursday, March 20, at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Center Moriches. Interment will be private.
