Riverhead reaches Final Four in Game of Hamlets

Little New Suffolk made a historic run. But the tiny hamlet came up just short against No. 1 seed Greenport this week.

The only upset in the second round was No. 2 seed Orient with 59 percent of the vote defeating No. 1 Shelter Island, the only top seed to not advance.

Orient will now face another No. 1 seed in Riverhead in one semifinal. The other matchup pits Greenport against No. 1 Mattituck, which blew out Jamesport with 62 percent of the vote.

The closest matchup of Round 2 was Greenport, which many folks are predicting will win it all, barely edging New Suffolk, where many folks in the community were rallying for support this week.

The biggest blowout? Riverhead, which may now be the favorite, earned 65 percent of the vote against Wading River.

Results of the second round of Game of Hamlets, sponsored by Corcoran Real Estate, were as follows:

Horton Region

No. 1 Greenport (52 percent) defeated No. 3 New Suffolk (48 percent)

Hallock Region

No. 1 Mattituck (62 percent) defeated No. 2 Jamesport (38 percent)

Sylvester Region

No. 2 Orient (59 percent) defeated No. 1 Shelter Island (41 percent)

Reeves Region

No. 1 Riverhead (65 percent) defeated No. 2 Wading River (35 percent)


The first round, which ended March 18, featured the following outcomes:

No. 1 Greenport (78 percent) defeated No. 4 East Marion (23 percent)

No. 3 New Suffolk (52 percent) defeated No. 2. Southold (48 percent)

Hallock Region

No. 1 Mattituck (74 percent) defeated No. 4 Laurel (26 percent)

No. 2 Jamesport (73 percent) defeated No. 3 Aquebogue (27 percent)

Sylvester Region

No. 1 Shelter Island (54 percent) defeated No. 4 Peconic (46 percent)

No. 2 Orient (51 percent) defeated No. 3 Cutchogue (49 percent)

Reeves Region

No. 1 Riverhead (80 percent) defeated No. 4 Calverton (20 percent)

No. 2 Wading River (57 percent) defeated No. 3 Baiting Hollow (43 percent)
