As a pre-game ceremony came to a close Saturday afternoon, Joe Kavanagh turned the microphone over to Liam McGuire, a 10-year-old who has endured a more than 38-month battle with leukemia.

“Good luck to all,” Liam said to the crowd at Shoreham-Wading River High School as the boys lacrosse team prepared to face Mount Sinai during the sixth annual Lax-Out Cancer event.

Liam, who has been a vital part of the Shorheam lacrosse program for several years now, had a chance to enjoy the day more so than in years past. He’s in remission now, and even had a soccer game Saturday. Although when asked how the game went, Liam noted the game had been canceled. It rained earlier in the day.

The fundraiser, part of a doubleheader featuring the girls lacrosse team beating Bellport and the boys taking down Mount Sinai, raised more than $15,000. That total was reached before the start of the games Saturday.
