Cops: Calverton man breaks protection order, charged with felony
A Calverton man was arrested on an separate active warrant Wednesday for allegedly grabbing a woman during an argument last month, despite an order of protection barring him from being near her, according to police and court documents.
The man was released without bail after he was arraigned in town court Thursday, a court clerk said.
Police said 25-year-old Charles Pettaway “physically” struggled with a woman at a residence on Union Avenue about 2 p.m. on April 20, according to a court filing. During the fight, a ceramic coffee cup the victim was holding broke and cut the palm of her right hand, causing “minor bleeding,” the document states.
The victim had been issued an order of protection against Mr. Pettaway by Suffolk County district Judge Chris Kelly on July 29, 2013, according to court documents.
Riverhead police caught Mr. Pettaway on East Avenue about 2:25 p.m. Wednesday and arrested him. He was charged with first degree criminal contempt, a felony, and harassment, a violation, according to a police statement.
He is due back in court on May 13.
