Flanders News: Local musicians to rock Battle of Bands

bands

Welcome to May, friends and neighbors. It took a while but I think winter is finally over. Mother’s Day is this weekend, after which the rule of thumb is you can plant flowers and vegetables. I’m hoping those really chilly mornings and evenings are finished until at least September. I wanted to shut my heat down completely but had to turn it on again a few times. I can’t wait for summer to get here.

The Friends of the Big Duck’s annual Craft Fair and Flea Market will be held Saturday, May 17 (rain date: May 18) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Big Duck Ranch. They are still seeking vendors. If you’re interested, call 727-0593 or visit bigduck.org for an application. Each 10-by-10 space is $50; food vendors, $100. Proceeds from this event go toward the beautification of the Big Duck Ranch and other endeavors. Please stop down and support our local icon.

Bands featuring local teenagers will rock the house at Ponquogue Beach on Dune Road in Hampton Bays Friday, June 13 (rain date: June 20), at 8 p.m. at the 12th annual Battle of the Bands. Band applications will be accepted until May 16 at 4 p.m. and are available at southamptontownny.gov/youthbureau. The event, sponsored by the Town of Southampton Youth Bureau, will bring together teens from all the villages in Southampton Town and will provide a memorable experience. Gates open at 7 p.m. Throughout the night, audience members will have a chance to win prizes by answering music trivia questions. There will also be an awards ceremony for bands that place first, second or third. Tickets are $5 at the door. For more information, call SYB at 702-2432.

On Friday, May 9, middle school students in grades 6-8 will own the night at the Hampton Bays Community Center, 25 Ponquogue Road. Dancing begins at 7 p.m. and ends at 10. Admission is $5 and transportation is available from most locations. Refreshments and pizza will be available for a small fee. For more information, find them on Facebook and Twitter at SouthamptonYB, visit southamptontownny.gov/youthbureau for a registration form, or call 702-2432.

Belated birthday wishes to Rhonda King, who celebrated April 26, from your fiancé, Eddie, and your children, Dasche, Amanda and Deandre. They hope you had a great day.

Happy birthday to Penny Hubert today, May 8. I hope you have a great day! Birthday greetings also go out to Julie Mendez on the 11th; Carmecha Langhorne on the 12th; my niece Charlotte Zaleski on the 15th; Blake Corwin on the 21st; and Colleen Eastwood on the 24th.

Remember to send me information about events or special activities that are going on in the community or at home. I would love to hear from more of you as I know we have a lot more going on than just a few birthdays and town events. Have a great weekend and happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there, including those who are a mom to a pet. Love your family and friends because life is too short. And remember to drive safely and don’t text while driving.
