Calverton News: Kent Animal Shelter’s ‘Evening of Comedy’

Kent-Shelter1

I hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day. My grandchildren spent part of their day with us at the farm. Julia helped her daddy on the tractor and Aiden got his first taste of dirt, literally!

I’ve gotta watch my little 10-month-old grandson closely. I put his little bare feet in the nice moist soil, taught him how to throw dirt bombs and removed the dirt from his little mouth when he tried to eat it. We all enjoyed the beautiful day; I hope you did, too!

Happy birthday to my friend Kerin Orlowski, who celebrated last week with her little ones, Cormac and Caleigh, and her husband, Steve. We all hope you had a super day, Ker. We love you dearly. Luke Hartenstein, our little neighbor across the street from the farm, turned 5 years old last week and we celebrated with him. Luke had a great party at his house, which included lots of his buddies, pony rides and fun. Happy birthday, Luke!

Kent Animal Shelter will host a fundraiser to help homeless pets on Friday, May 16, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Hotel Indigo East End in Riverhead. You will surely enjoy this “Evening of Comedy,” complete with hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, chinese auction, raffle, a pet boutique, a scavenger hunt, and comedy by Laughter Saves Lives. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Call Kent for tickets at 727-5731. Have fun!

Don’t forget to go to Riverhead High School this Friday, May 16, at 7 p.m. and be awed by the talented artists in our school district.

Field Days at Riley Avenue Elementary School will be held Wednesday and Thursday, May 28 and 29, and end with the fourth grade on June 5. June! Did I say June? Yes, I did. A few more tests are on the horizon but we’re getting close.

School will be closed Monday, May 26, for Memorial Day. Enjoy!

Asparagus has arrived in full force and is simply wonderful, so enjoy it. Here’s a great recipe: Cut some asparagus into one-inch pieces. Place on a cookie sheet with lots of fresh garlic and drizzle olive oil on top. Bake to desired tenderness. Remove and sprinkle some parmesan cheese on top. Yum!

That’s all for this week. There is an early deadline for the May 29 issue. Any news you’d like to share with the community should be sent to me by Thursday evening, May 22. Take care, be safe and I shall talk to you next time. Bye.
