Mr. Fischer, a strategic business consultant from Calverton, said he decided to run for school board to bring “financial sustainability” to the district.”

Mr. Fischer, 57, said he has several ideas to make the district more efficient, including posting video recordings of school board meetings on the district’s website to improve communication with residents and exchanging fluorescent bulbs for LED lights to save on energy costs.

“The school board must become more creative, strategic and long-term in how it will limit tax increases in a hostile economy with a shrinking tax base,” he said.

Mr. Fischer has four children, including a first-grader and a fourth-grader enrolled in the district. He’s an Americans for Legal Reform board member and a former trustee of the Calverton Civic Association.

As a school board member, Mr. Fischer said he’ll work toward securing grants and establishing public-private partnerships to expand educational opportunities for students.

“All five candidates are great people committed to our town,” he said. “Like creating a financial portfolio, this year [each resident’s] vote is an investment in the financial sustainability of our school district and the quality of education for our next generation of neighbors.”

Mr. Fischer previously ran unsuccessful campaigns for Riverhead town clerk and supervisor.
