The two candidates for the Republican congressional nomination next month faced off in a debate last Friday on Long Island News Radio, tackling issues such as illegal immigration, veterans’ health, unemployment benefits, Ukraine, and other issues.

Lee Zeldin — a two-time state Senator from Shirley who has support of the GOP establishment — and George Demos — a former Securities and Exchange Commission lawyer who has attempted twice in the past to get the First District seat, backing out once — will vie for Republican support on June 24.

The winner of the race will face six-time incumbent Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) this fall.
