Shoreham-Wading River School District’s student athletes has a new club to join that gives them opportunities to gain management experience and raise money for sports teams.

The school board unanimously approved a proposal to create an “athletics club” during its meeting Tuesday.

Athletics director Mark Passamonte said the club will serve as an umbrella organization for all the district’s teams.

“It would be district oversight that would allow our teams to be able to fundraise with their coaches,” he said.

When some board members asked if the funds will be shared between the teams, Mr. Passamonte said he would keep records of how much each team had raised and make sure the money remained with its team.

Mr. Passamonte said he would supervise two students — one male and one female — to act as “student treasurers” of the club. Any funds raised by the Wildcat Athletic Club, a private charity for the athletics program, would be transferred to the new club, he said, adding the charity is free to continue raising money for students.

Lauren Daly, a rising senior and lacrosse player, said she wanted to be a part of the athletics club because she believes it will look good on a student’s transcript for college applications.

“I think it helps the teams to come together more and allows the kids to manage their teams rather then the parents running it,” she said.
