Update 4 p.m.: Riverhead police said a fire that burned an abandoned barn to the ground in Calverton Wednesday afternoon “does not appear suspicious.”

The fire remains under investigation by Riverhead police detectives. Anyone with information on the fire are asked to call police at 727-4500 ext. 321.

Original story: Wading River and Riverhead firefighters extinguished a structure fire at an abandoned barn in Calverton Wednesday that sparked shortly after noon.

The barn — located about 50 yards north of Route 25, and just east of Fresh Pond Avenue — was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene, according to Wading River chief Kevin McQueeney.

The call came in about 12:25 p.m. for a possible structure fire in the woods. The barn was covered by overgrown trees, and crews were able to stop the fire from spreading until Riverhead arrived on scene with a tanker truck as backup.

“Luckily enough, we were able to contain it,” McQueeney said. As of 1:15 p.m., firefighters had contained the fire and were putting out hot spots.

Riverhead Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
