To the editor:

You would think that after running a highly negative campaign that yielded just 21 percent in last year’s Republican primary, Tony Coates would alter his snarky approach to Riverhead politics. But after having read his June 27 submission to the Riverhead News-Review, it’s apparent that Mr. Coates is doubling down on his pit bull politics.

Under the guise of opining on the town’s handling of possible noise ordinance violations, Mr. Coates submitted a 439-word rant attacking and attempting to embarrass several Town Board members, including me — his favorite target. This approach, focused on politics not policy, has become his signature.

Mr. Coates is no dummy and, I will admit, he’s a witty writer. In the future, I would hope he would use his talents to offer policy positions, aimed at improving our town’s fiscal health and quality of life. That approach, not issuing relentless personal attacks, would best benefit Riverhead residents.
