Police from multiple agencies scoured the Calverton and Wading River area late Tuesday afternoon after a mentally disabled teenage boy wandered away from a motel, Riverhead police said. He was located safely about an hour later, police said.

The boy’s mother reported the 15-year-old missing around 6:30 p.m. She told police her son had last been seen at the Wading River Motel around 6 p.m., police said.

Her call launched a wide-scale search for the boy. Numerous officers from Riverhead, Suffolk County, Suffolk County Parks, New York State and New York State Parks police departments responded and searched the surrounding area on foot. K9 units and a Suffolk police helicopter assisted in the search, police said.

About an hour into the search, officers located the boy in Calverton Cemetery and he was returned safely to his mother, police said.
